ETMA Tech Talk Podcast Introduction to Tellennium

This episode begins with Tellennium’s approach to expense management. They’re managing telecom costs and other expense categories including utilities, SaaS, software licenses, and anything that involves complex enterprise expenses. As Shawn explains,

“We automate invoice collection, auditing, and payment while providing expertise for each service.”

Market Segments and Security Concerns

Tellennium’s client roster includes many organizations focused on healthcare and finance sectors. This is due, in part, to Tellennium’s HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance. HIPAA, establishes national standards to protect sensitive patient health information, known as PHI (Protected Health Information).

Shawn highlights the importance of data security and compliance, emphasizing the critical decision to keep their operations onshore:

““Opening up code development internationally increases the number of platform attacks. By keeping it local, we maintain higher security standards.”

Differentiators and Market Position

A key differentiator for Tellennium is their capability to handle utilities and SaaS licenses, not just telecom expenses. Additionally, strategic partnerships, like the investment from Netspark, have enabled them to enhance their operational efficiency and visibility of charges for clients.

Evolution of Telecom and SaaS

From on-prem solutions to cloud-based SaaS models, Tellennium has witnessed a major shift in the market. Shawn shares how convincing clients to adopt SaaS models was initially a challenge due to security concerns, but today’s enterprises recognize SaaS as the standard, attracted by the cost efficiency and scalability it offers.

Managing Complex Enterprise Expenses

Simplification is key. As telecommunications have become less intricate, integrating telecom with evolving SaaS models is crucial. Shawn notes that the demand for more unified ecosystems is a growing trend, with Tellennium focusing on platforms that allow easy management of a wide range of expense categories including utility and other areas under one platform.

Sales Anecdotes and Surprising Discoveries

Sales, according to Shawn, are rarely predictable. He shares anecdotes and identifies hidden financial expenses like unused services costing clients thousands monthly. This illustrates value Tellennium brings to their clients. In one case, within the first month of implementation, an OC-12 (Optical Carrier network line with transmission speeds of up to 622.08 Mbit/s commonly used by ISPs for wide area network (WAN) connections, or connecting xDSL customers to a larger internal network.) was identified as having no usage. After receiving authorization to implement a recommendation to disconnect the unused OC-12, Tellennium saved the client $480,000 in annual expenses.

Challenges and Solutions in Expense Management

Visibility remains a primary challenge in expense management. Tellennium’s approach involves an accurate, thorough, inventory which is continually receiving updates based on MACD (Move Add Change Disconnect) activity. The inventory platform Management of Things® (MoT®) provides detailed inventory management and granular data. Whether it’s confirming the utility of a telecom circuit or exposing unnecessary expense lines, their methodology is rooted in providing clear insights for informed decision-making.

Growth and Business Goals

With a solid growth trajectory, Tellennium balances its rapid growth with a deliberate plan to avoid expanding too rapidly. This strategy involves measured expansion to ensure they continue to provide quality support while growing. Shawn credits their consistent growth to a superior product and strong market reputation.
